How to Convert a USB to RS232:



RS-232 is a serial connection commonly found on older hardware devices such as printers, scanners and monitors. Most newer computers no longer support RS-232 connections, but have instead, chosen the faster, more reliable USB 2.0 connections. These connections support data transfer rates of up to 480MB. Connecting RS-232 hardware devices to USB ports is now possible, using an easy to use USB to RS232 Serial Adapter Cable, bridging the gap between modern and older devices.

• Connect the USB end of the serial adapter cable to an open USB port on your computer. Depending on your computer mode, USB ports are located on the back and front of the computer. If you do not have a USB to RS232 Serial Adapter Cable, purchase one
• Connect the other end of the serial adapter cable to the RS-232 serial port on your serial printer, scanner or other device

How to Configure a USB 2.0 to an Rs232 Serial Adapter:



The USB 2.0 to RS232 serial adapter is a single cable designed to take a serial connection (from hardware such as a printer or scanner) and hook it up to a USB connection port on the computer. Even through the device is a single cable, there are a few different configuration steps you must perform before the computer is able to detect the serial connected hardware.

• Insert the serial cable into the serial port of the hardware you wish to hook up to your computer. Tighten the small screws on the side of the cable to secure the cable connection
• Attach the opposite end of the serial cable into the serial connection port on the adapter
• Plug the USB end of the cable into one of the USB ports on the computer
• Power on the connected serial hardware then insert the driver installation CD for the adapter cable. In a moment the driver installation wizard appears on screen. Click "Next," then accept the license agreement (you are not allowed to install the driver until you do). Click "Next" two more times then click "Install" to install the driver onto your computer
• Eject the current installation CD and insert the driver installation CD for the connected serial hardware. Once this installation wizard appears follow the same prompts and click "Install" to install the driver for the hardware. Once the installation is finished, the hook up and configuration for the equipment is complete
